Tomoko Nagai
Tomoko Nagai (b. 1982, Japan) creates dreamlike worlds populated by animals, childhood memories, and intimate everyday motifs. Through layered compositions and a distinctive visual language, their works blur the boundaries between reality and imagination.
What draws me to Nagai’s work is the way it treats imagination not as an escape from reality, but as part of it. Their paintings often feel familiar without being specific, like fragments of memories that belong to many people at once. In a culture increasingly shaped by speed and constant information, I find something refreshing in their ability to create spaces that encourage curiosity, reflection, and wonder. The longer I spend with Nagai’s work, the more it feels less like looking at a painting and more like revisiting a state of mind.
