Iori Nagashima

Iori Nagashima (b. 1997, Japan) creates paintings that transform everyday scenes, people, and memories into quietly atmospheric images. Working primarily in oil paint, they explores the subtle space between observation and recollection, inviting viewers to look beyond what is immediately visible.

What I find compelling about Iori Nagashima’s work is its ability to slow down the act of looking. Their paintings often begin with familiar subjects like people, interiors, fragments of daily life, yet they never feel entirely fixed. The images seem to exist somewhere between memory and observation, clarity and uncertainty.

For a generation surrounded by endless streams of images, there is something surprisingly refreshing about work that resists immediate answers. Rather than demanding attention through spectacle, Nagashima’s paintings reward patience. The longer I spend with them, the more they feel like conversations about what we notice, what we overlook, and how memories quietly reshape the way we see the world.
