Piano Sonata (2022)

12.9"×20.8" (330mm×530mm×25mm)

Oil and acrylic on canvas

Kaoru Shibuta

Kaoru Shibuta explores the relationship between sound and image through paintings that translate rhythm, resonance, and movement into visual form. Through layered compositions and expressive mark-making, the work invites viewers to experience sound not as something heard, but as something seen and felt.

What stays with me about Kaoru Shibuta's work is that it never feels completely silent.

Even though the paintings exist entirely in a visual space, they seem to carry a rhythm and energy that extends beyond the canvas. Looking at them, I am reminded that some experiences are felt before they are understood.

That sense of openness is what keeps drawing me back.
